Hall and Maitland

Hall and Maitland shortly after construction almost a hundred years ago and below as it is today.  The building was designed by Edward Fisher (brother of historian and politician H.A.L.Fisher) and built in 1913 to house a dining hall, senior common room, private dining room, kitchen and a block of twenty new student rooms and allowed the College to dine together in one place for the first time.

  1. The actors in the picture from Twelfth Night are:
Muriel Wiggins (Malvolio) and Nancy Samuel (Sir Toby Belch), with Diana Lucas (Sir Andrew Aguecheek) and – I think – Katherine Reid (Fabian) lurking in the bushes at the back.

  2. The British architect Edmund Montagu Prinsep Fisher son of historian Herbert William Fisher designed one of the most solid, functional and beautiful buildings of Manaus in 1903. It was built in 1906 and is an architectural icon of the city. It is regrettable that this issue is little discussed. The name of the building is Customs of Manaus, are two buildings on the same set. And can be seen in the link: http://portal.iphan.gov.br/image.php?w=880&h=587&src=uploads/ckfinder/images/Diversas/AM_Manaus/Alfandega_Manaus_AM_Nabil_Bonduk.jpg

    • Apologies for the delay in replying. Thank you for your comment and the link, what an impressive building. Edmund Fisher trained in the office of Basil Champneys, the architect who designed Somerville’s library, completed in 1903.
